Information in the Service of Society

Membership

FID currently has over 300 members in more than 75 countries. Many members are professional associations or major institutions with large numbers of members or staff. More than 100,000 information professionals and others are reached either directly or indirectly through FID membership.

FID Members fall into six main categories: International Members; National Members; Corporate Members; Institutional Members; Personal Members; and Honorary Fellows. Each category is entitled to different rights and benefits and is liable to pay different rates of membership dues; however, membership categories, rights, benefits and dues are currently under review, and major changes are expected to be introduced in 2000.

In 1999, special low rates of membership dues were introduced for Institutional and Personal Members in the Least Developed Countries recognized as such by the United Nations (see list for countries included).

International Members

These are international intergovernmental or non-governmental organizations, institutions or associations with global, regional or sub-regional activities and programmes. International Members’ dues for 2000: NLG 3,000.00.

National Members

National members are usually national-level institutions or associations, but may also be specially-created FID National Committees composed of representatives of various information institutions and organizations within a given country. Annual dues for National Members are calculated according to a formula based on the system for calculating UN dues. Please consult the FID Secretariat for information on the amount of dues for specific countries.

Corporate Members

Corporate Members are companies or institutions wishing to promote their products and services through FID channels, while at the same time participating in and contributing to FID’s programme activities.

There are three levels of Corporate Member, each paying different dues.
Corporate Members at different levels are entitled to different combinations of advertising and promotional opportunities through FID publications and other channels.

  • Corporate Partners
  • Corporate Associates
  • Corporate Affiliates
Institutional Members

Institutional Members are institutions, organizations or associations operating at the national or local level but not wishing to be recognized as National Members, or companies not wishing to use FID channels for promotional purposes. Annual dues for 2000: Least Developed Countries (see list): NLG 200.00. Regular dues (all other countries): NLG 600.00.

Personal Members

Personal Members are private individuals who wish to join FID in their own right. Annual dues for 2000: Least Developed Countries (see list): NLG 50.00. Regular dues (all other countries): NLG 200.00.

Honorary Fellows

The FID Council may elect as Honorary Fellows persons who, in the View of the Federation, have attained special distinction. They are invited to attend the General Assembly as observers. Honorary Fellows do not pay membership dues.
